Our History

BigBlackHen.com, based in Welwyn Garden City, was founded by Nigel Adams as he felt that there had to be a more innovative, consumer friendly and cost effective way for people to sell their homes in the internet age.

Before starting BigBlackHen.com, Nigel Adams was a Director of one of the most successful advertising agencies in London, having spent 16 years in the business both in the UK and overseas. He advised some of the world’s top companies on advertising and marketing strategy including Ford, Guinness, Unilever and Pepsi. He brings all of his marketing expertise to bear when helping Hertfordshire house sellers get a successful sale at the best possible price.

BigBlackHen.com started life in deepest darkest Exmoor in 2005 and went from success to success culminating in the company having the accolade of being voted amongst the top 20 estate agents in the country at the 2010 ESTAs, one of the biggest award ceremonies in the business. In September 2010 Nigel opened a new office in his home county of Hertfordshire where he now lives. After growing up in Little Berkhamstead, going to Lochinver House School in Potters Bar and playing rugby for Welwyn Rugby Club for 16 years, it is very much a case of coming home. The business has continued to grow and was nominated for another Estate Agency of the Year Award in 2013. The black hen Sold boards are now a familiar site all over Hertfordshire and North London.

One final thing: people often ask what gave us the idea for our admittedly rather unusual company name. The answer is that it was inspired by our beautiful Black Orpington hen, Clarissa, pictured opposite. She works beautifully to get our business and your home noticed.
